General Statement of Duties

Performs technical paraprofessional planning duties involving considerable public contact, office research, field investigation, and reviewing of applications and plans; does related work as required.

Essential Duties


This high-profile position provides advanced clerical and technical support for the Development Design and Review Division, which administers plans of development, site plans and subdivision applications, including architectural, landscape, lighting, and related development review materials. Key responsibilities include:

  • Prepare Planning Commission and Director agendas, minutes, reports, correspondence, and official case documents
  • Process property owner notifications, approval and deferral letters, and appeal materials for Planning Commission, Board of Supervisors and Director agenda cases
  • Provide clerical and technical support for plans of development, site plans and subdivision applications
  • Assist planning staff and the Division Head with case processing, file management, and retrieval of development records
  • Maintain accurate physical and digital files; scan and organize exhibits for digital review and storage
  • Collect, record, and deposit application fees
  • Proofread documents for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with legal requirements
  • Provide paraprofessional planning assistance to the public regarding zoning, subdivision, and development regulations
  • Support planners by collecting and organizing data for planning reports
  • Provide backup support for rezoning cases and assist with receptionist duties as needed
  • Utilize Microsoft Office, FileNet, Tidemark, Crystal Reports, Adobe, POSSE and GIS applications
  • Performs related duties as assigned
Additional Information

Experience with the use of Microsoft Office, electronic plan review platforms, electronic document management and storage platforms, Adobe Acrobat and GIS are desirable.

This position is part of an approved career development plan and may be filled at either a Planning Technician or Senior Planning Technician consistent with the successful candidate's experiences and qualifications and the need of the department at the time of hire. Minimum requirements and salary range for both roles are detailed below:

Planning Technician:

Completion of two (2) years of college-level work in planning, engineering technology or a related field, and two (2) years of experience in topographical, structural or cartographic drafting; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. $49,521.91 - $91,097.89

Senior Planning Technician:

Completion of two (2) years of college-level work in planning, engineering technology or a related field, and four (4) years of experience in topographical, structural or cartographic drafting; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. $54,390.39 - $100,053.68

Some positions may require possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of Virginia.

Minimum Requirements
