General Statement of Duties

Collaborate with the principal and faculty to assess the school’s strengths and areas of need in literacy, with the goal of improving students’ reading, writing, communication, and overall academic achievement. Support teachers individually or in collaborative teams by providing a comprehensive range of strategies for reading, writing, and communication. Observe instruction and offer feedback related to literacy development and best practices. Stay current with Scientific-Based Reading Research (SBRR) to inform instructional decisions.

Provide professional learning opportunities that strengthen teachers’ capacity to enhance students’ literacy skills. Model effective literacy strategies and instructional practices. Administer standardized assessments in reading and mathematics, and deliver targeted interventions for Tier II and Tier III students. Ensure student access to books and maintain the bookroom and all Title I resources. Analyze academic data to identify trends and inform schoolwide instruction.


Essential Duties
  • Demonstrates knowledge of evidence and research-based literacy practices
  • Summarize and disseminate the key concepts from this research to the faculty at regular intervals
  • Incorporate scientifically Based Reading Research (SBRR) best practices into the instructional model  
  • Administer STAR tests in the areas of reading and mathematics to all enrolled students 
  • Maintains records and evidence of student progress monitoring and adjusts instructional plans based on data
  • Distribute assessment data to the teaching staff in a usable, organized, and electronic format 
  • Model integration of literacy strategies and best practices
  • Foster a school-wide climate of literacy and learning 
  • Provide support for teachers as they work to enhance the reading, writing, and communication skills of students
  • Provide targeted remediation to Tier III and Tier II students
  • Encourage and support opportunities for the independent literacy development of students outside school hours
  • Model lessons, team-teach, find resources, promote reading strategies, and literacy initiatives
  • Support and enhance, not supplant, classroom instruction 
  • Ensure access to books and maintain the bookroom and all Title I resources
  • Analyze data to identify school academic trends 
  • Deliver Professional Learning to teachers at regular intervals and attend Professional Learning  as appropriate 
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Regular attendance is required


Additional Information

The minimum salary for this 239-day position is $68,227 with a bachelor’s degree.  The annual salary will be prorated based upon the work begin date.

State or Federal Funding Clause
This agreement and the continuation of this position are contingent upon the availability of specific special revenue funds.

Minimum Requirements

Must hold a valid Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement as a Reading Specialist.  History of successful teaching (especially in the area of reading).  Effective organization and administrative management skills, including the use of technology. Experience and/or enthusiasm about peer leadership opportunities and professional learning. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds frequently and 25 to 50 pounds occasionally, and may assist, move, when required,. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, lift, walk, stand, and hear.
